Lately, I have noticed that my penchant for vintage rugs is turning into a very real deal.
My first two vintage rugs are my babes. I love them with all my heart and soul.
Whenever new rugs appear in my favorite online stores, my first inclination is to click BUY.
Not realistic obvy! Money certainly doesn’t grow on any trees I own. Merp.

Must-Dos to Blend a Vintage Rug into your home
- Start with a jute rug. I highly recommend a neutral base when you layer of rugs. For me, I love the texture and colors of natural jute. It roughs up the vintage detailed rug pattern with the raw edges but the neutral color offsets the colorful pattern of the vintage rug on top.
- If you find Jute too raw and uncomfortable underfoot, then I recommend a low pile neutral rug in cream, white or grey to create a neutral base.
- When deciding what rugs you want to layer, think of what you want to compliment. Do you want your room to be bold and colorful? This rug from eSaleRugs would be perfect on top. If you want to add visual interest but aren’t ready to go bold, then reverse the idea and use a large vintage rug as the base and use the next size down neutral rug on top.
- Use different textures and shapes. Faux cowhide skins are a great way to accent a space but lay so flat on the floor. Why not put it on top of a jute or even try a muted vintage rug?!
- I love shag rugs because they are so warm, cozy and soft. They make an ideal base or top.
Don’ts When Blending a Vintage Rug into your home
- Be very intentional when deciding which two rugs to layer. Don’t just layer for the sake of layering! Try layering a solid with a pattern. Layering two patterns on top of each other can be dicey. Be picky when pairing two printed rugs together. When in doubt, go back to layering a solid with a pattern or contact me for help!
- Be sure you choose the appropriate rug sizes for the space. The two rugs must be different enough in size to have enough gap to show off why you layered them.
- At the same time, don’t layer one 4×6 with an 8×10 because it will create a large gap. You may feel it is artful but truth be told, it will look awkward. With design, everything is about scale. As long as two things are to scale with each other, your chances of success improves.
- If you are layering rugs on top of carpet, the base rug must have a strong pad and backing. From personal experience, if the rug has no backing, it will roll up easily and become a major trip hazard.
Adding a Vintage Rug to the Bathroom
The girls’ bathroom is white with pops of blue aqua tiles. I am obsessed with the perfect balance white and aqua.
Something I’ve seen a lot lately on Pinterest and Instagram is vintage rugs. It’s time to throw out that 80s shag rug mat! You know what I am talking about right? Lol.
