Thanksgiving is over! And we’re jumping right into transforming a very special bedroom for the holidays!

When we first moved in, my girls’ current bedroom was a shared boys’ room for the previous owners. The bright neon lime walls weren’t inviting for us at all. Although I understood why their boys loved it!

So I painted it a beige bland. A few years later, I decided it was time to paint fun colors to reflect the girls’ personalities. So for Rachel, she picked a moody yet bold blue with magenta and black undertones. I was quite impressed by her 10-year-old choice!

I guess the apple doesn’t fall from the tree.

And for the younger two? We were right into the throes of the original Frozen movie. I found the most perfect pink/purple/magenta with grey undertones.

But 6 years have passed and Natalie is busy trying to keep up with her tween sister Emily.

A huge disadvantage of painting a room one color is the limitations of changing the palette easily. I tried really hard to work within the pink walls. It was very black or white as far as color theory (no pun intended). Either I went all neutral with textiles and furniture. Or I went with the pink and made a rainbow palette of textiles and whimsical art.

Both were fun and quite satisfying to design. I’m very blessed to have these two design assistants. They are always up for a change!

Needless to say when I told them it was time to paint over that dingy pink they were up for it. However, they both voiced concern about it being too “boring”. For a kid, white seems boring. And I get it! Didnt we used to say the same? Then we started painting our walls beige-gold and red back in the 2000s.

I’m forever a fan of white walls. So I told them to trust mommy! I explained that we could play with all kinds of colors, beddings, and ideas without fighting with the pink color. Thankfully they understood and quickly came on board.

How To quickly transform your bedroom: My Why

Every year I try my best to turn the girls’ room into something magical. One year it was a Candyland wonderland and another year it was a boho desert holiday room.

Since the pink walls were so dingy, I knew the room needed a fresh coat of white paint.

Next,  I was looking for holiday bedding. Since it’s only for the winter and holiday season, I didn’t want to break the bank either!

Cue the black and white buffalo check plaid bedding from Walmart! It was so cute and yet not overly holiday-themed. And yes, it’s a busy print. So it only further solidified my decision to paint the room white.

I’m thoroughly impressed with all the home decor I find at Walmart. With the holidays in full force, I find myself not only going there to get groceries, but shopping for gifts and home decor. As a busy working mom, this really helps streamline my busy schedule. I

The painting  took Travis and me two to three days because the pink took a bit longer to paint over. But soon enough we were done! I can’t even tell you how my brain immediately felt the dopamine increase and adrenaline coursing through my veins.

It was as if my mood elevated by tenfold! As I mention with each project, my why for each space that I transform is always connected to relational benefits. Whether it’s to increase communication between partners or alleviating mommy guilt from the chaos of a messy kitchen, it’s my passion to elevate our home to a place of deeper connection with ourselves and family at home.

My why for my girls’ shared bedroom is to help accentuate the positive side of sharing a bedroom with their sibling. What are the positives? Welp, for one you always have company. And with the company, so many fun connections are made. The more time we spend with someone, the more we relate on a deep level. They are learning conflict resolution skills, positive communication skills, taking responsibility for themselves and self-assertion.

So with that in mind, why not have them learn in an aesthetically pleasing and dopamine happy environment?  It’s not always easy sharing a bedroom with a sibling, but I truly believe it’s character building. So my gift to them is to have fun each holiday season. And for them to celebrate the camaraderie that comes along with sharing a small space together.

How To quickly transform your bedroom with black and white: Bedding

When I saw the buffalo check plaid bedding, I knew it was aligned with my design vision. It quickly became my design inspiration piece. When transforming a space, you must have an inspo element. It could be a colorful leaf from outside that has turned red and amber or a textile that reminds you of your trip to Morrocco last fall.

I view buffalo check plaid as the classic symbol of holiday coziness. Whether it’s red and black or black and white, it evokes cozy fireplace chats with blankets, pillows and hot cocoa. Talk about positive brain activity and relational connectivity!

I also paired each bedding with a black super plush blanket. I love having two blankets on the bed because my girls have a great talent kicking off blankets during the night. So having two blankets ensure that at least one will stay on!

Another reason for two blankets is that you can mix and match the look you want. If you want to go bold then have the buffalo check plaid laid out fully on the bed. The solid black blanket would act as the secondary accent.

Conversely, I have the black plush blanket fully laid out but the buffalo check plaid is also laid fully on top!  Now that both are shown equally, it creates a very balanced look. I really like this idea I came up with!

For additional accents, white drapery, baskets to hold their beloved toys, faux Mongolian pelt, a bench under the window and additional fuzzy pillows all make this quick transformation a huge success!

Oh! And I found this black and white plaid garland from Walmart that definitely will make its way to this room too!

I see this hanging above the drapery rod as a wonderfully festive touch.

I found so many great home decor ideas when I was researching the bedding. Instead of letting it go to waste, I made a holiday bedroom design for ages 10 and up!

This festive bedroom can literally be for anyone and any kind of bedroom! From the guest room to the master bedroom, the elevated red and black buffalo plaid evokes warm winter lodge vibes.
